The authenticity of the musicians from here also dreaming...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! 20 years old in 2020 ! NEW PROJECT // NEW LINE UP

This band born in 2000 has released four CDs for W.E.R.F label: Racines du Ciel, Lobster Caravan, Pourquoi pas un scampi? and Odyssée 14.

Rêve d’Éléphant Orchestra’ is an ensemble from Belgium... A title which is quite suitable because it is a bit surrealistic and you know that Belgium is a country which, for internal politics but also for artistic reasons, has many links with surrealism. This relatively big band made of seven musicians produces music which has a great deal of exuberance, generosity, freedom, rigour in its writing also, besides being picturesque and joyful. The band really gives you pleasure. Their music surprises you in a good way, quite open to many things, bouncing and swinging quite naturally between its many influences. I find nothing artificial at all. Today, musicians have the possibility to pick a bit from everything and sometimes its is just plain or boring copy-paste. This is not world music, this is still jazz as it is a way of making music which has several sources from elsewhere, though I don’t think it  borrows anything from “world music”; it is just an open state of mind.

Rêve d’Eléphant Orchestra exists in three options:
• as an instrumental septet (new project and line-up)
• as septet with two guest singers (Odyssée 14)
• with three drummers/percussion players and special guest singers (REPercussion)

Line up septet

MICHEL DEBRULLE drums, Binche big drum

NICOLAS DECHÊNE guitars

Odyssée 14

For this special occasion, the band revisits music and texts going from the 14th century to today with the “nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything changes” spirit of Antoine Lavoisier.
Jazz, dance, reading and singing are part of the colour palette of this new performance, freely inspired by authors and composers like Jacopo da Bologna, Stravinsky, Messiaen, Marais, Shakespeare, Faulkner, Rimbaud, Picasso, Kerouac, Montaigne, Burroughs…

Like the previous albums where the band was nourished by all sorts of influences to create its own compositions and arrangements, this is again a matter of absorption and impregnation resulting in the creation of a unique repertoire. Rather than a music or literature history lesson, the idea here is to offer a long musical, visual and poetical journey where spectators are invited to revisit their historical, musical and literary landmarks in the context of the timeless jungle of an imaginary continent.

For this magic formula, Rêve d’léphant welcomes two other artists from the Collectif du Lion: the singer-dancer David Hernandez and the actor-singer-songwriter Thierry Devillers.

REPercussion

RE (Rêve d’Eléphant) Percussion is the DNA of Rêve d’Eléphant Orchestra with its percussive bazaar of bodhran, tupan, congas, derbouka, bells, spoons...
Dense like a jungle of hypersensitive drumheads, tribal rather than ethnic, precise like the cogs of a Swiss watch, their unique blend of muffled sounds and percussive melodies (sometimes enhanced by machines) might well break your house down !

MICHEL DEBRULLE drums, Binche big drum

STEPHAN POUGIN bodhran, tupan, congas, darbuka, drums

 + GUESTS (percussionist and dancer)

" (...) Surrealist, dreamlike, strange, unusual? Adjectives abound. But what do words matter: listen, listen again, again, you will not get tired. This Rêve d’Éléphant is light as a butterfly and powerful as a beetle."
